New voices, New Stories

Thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund Brighton & Hove Museums have taken the opportunity to shake up our formula with Telling Tales, Talking Trails. In collaboration with volunteers, we developed a set of digital experiments aimed at introducing new ways of storytelling.

A Preston Manor audio guide was introduced in 2022. This is a spoken WebApp tour with transcribed text and images created by volunteers, this is accessed through a browser on your mobile device as you walk around the building or can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home.

This was followed by One Minute Wonders in 2023. This combined the power of digital storytelling with an exhibition of animal and plant-related prints and drawings from our collection.

The third and final phase of our project, Telling Tales, Talking Trails is now underway. It will once again include the contribution of volunteers to create new digital stories for Brighton Museum & Art Gallery and develop more inclusive ways of storytelling.

We would like to share with you our methods and findings on Thursday 19 October at Preston Manor at our museum digital storytelling seminar. Doors will open at 10am and the day will be broken into two sessions with guest speakers in the morning, followed by lunch, and then in the afternoon, an opportunity to explore Preston Manor and experience our WebApp tour for yourself.

Telling Tales, Talking Trails: Digital Storytelling at Preston Manor Open Morning

In collaboration with Dreamy Place – and in addition to Telling Tales, Talking Trails: Digital Storytelling seminar day on Thursday 19 October – Preston Manor will be open to the public on Saturday 21 October for general visitors between 9.30am and 12pm midday.

Visitors will get the opportunity to use a new a new audio guide for Preston Manor that Brighton & Hove Museums have introduced. In collaboration with volunteers, Brighton & Hove Museums developed this spoken WebApp tour with transcribed text and images. It is accessed through the browser on your mobile device as you walk around the building, or it can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home.

Clue Company – A Murder Mystery at the Manor

An original experience created by Pier Pressure, inspired by a beloved classic board game. The world’s greatest detective agency, Clue Company, are looking for new detectives! Applicants will need to prove they’ve got what it takes by cracking the case before the other teams of wannabe detectives.

A grisly murder has happened in a grand manor house; none other than Brighton’s own Preston Manor. Who committed this heinous crime? Where did they do the deed? Which nasty weapon did they use? These are the questions you and your team of intrepid detectives will need to answer. The suspects are lining up, and they’re a dodgy looking bunch, so you’ll have your work cut out for you.

Choose your own route around Preston Manor to seek out puzzles. Solve these and they will give you the clues you need to unravel the mystery. Once you have all the clues you need, your team can huddle and make your deduction.

Please be aware that more than one team can play this game at the same time but there are plenty of different rooms to explore so you can avoid each other if you so desire!

• Preston Manor is accessible by wheelchair but two of the rooms used for the game are upstairs so are not accessible.
